Discussion and opinion

  • There is a guy that I found on youtube called Syntheticsax. He has some tunes where is plays the sax over the instrumental to popular tunes of today. Some of his tracks are downloadable. There are two tunes that I play anytime I play downtempo stuff, his versions of Avicii's Wake Me Up and Eric Prydz's Pjanoo. When I play Pjanoo I most often play an edit I made that starts out with the original and then goes into his sax version. This seems to go over really well with people. Hope this can give you some ideas, and great vids, Daniel - Daniel Jemiolo

  • I'm constantly looking for alternatives to "Standards and cheesy smooth Jazz". One that works great for me is the "Unwrapped" series by Hidden Beach Recordings which are Jazz versions of classic Hip-Hop tunes. Check them out , they're excellent. - tbiber
  • I play "Spanish Guitar" music... that's always a big hit on my end... all it is, is spanish guitar versions of anything with no vocals... It's not slow enough to put people to sleep nor is it upbeat enough to make people dance.. like this... youtube.com/watch?v=cSddF86Uhc4 (I do alot of latin events... ) - DJSpontaneous
  • the last 8 weddings i done they hate elevator music ( jazz ; smooth jazz) - HYVBJ JGT

  • I'm using jazz (both mellow and a bit uptempo, lately some nujazz), piano/sax instrumental version for well known hits and bossa nova remixes with smooth (often) female voices. If the party is a bit more on the classy side, Vitamin String Quartet gets the job done. - Ionut Maxim
  • .i've noticed your logo signature (BSR) on top right hand corner of this video.. Cool..!! As far for cocktail music I have played some up tempo Spanish guitar.. - chinoporto

  • Some good choices Brian Usually, If the Bride & Groom have not specified, I like to do a little Jack Johnson, UB40 - Red Red Wine, Trooper - Here for a good time, Bob Marley - Jammin / One Love, Jimmy Cliff - I Can See Clearly, etc.. just to name a few. I find that the music is not to slow and not to up beat. Enough to keep people in a mood that they look forward to dancing. Also, majority of it is well known so people can sing a long. Cheers! - demo316
  • Brian, keep it coming, great information! - rramon1
  • Brian, will you be doing some videos from the floor there @ the DJ expo? - rramon1

  • Royalty free music is great for this, stuff from incompotech, machinimasound, etc, works great :D - IUsedToBeANinja4895
  • I prefer to use non-vocal smooth jazz during cocktail hour because guests are usually visiting/talking/catching up and you don't want them to be competing with vocals between each other to be heard by each other. When it moves on to the dinner portion of the event, I prefer artists like Steve Tyrell, Dianna Krall, Fleetwood Mac, Air Supply is great, Feist is great, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews Band, Mumford & Sons, etc. Not sleepy, great love (staying together, not breaking up) song - Brandon Walters
  • Great video! When and where are you going to be speaking at the Las Vegas DJ Show? I want to be there for that :) - dex newberry
  • I go si - sexytruckerman
  • Great vid, I like to mix up the genres as well. I do mostly the Smooth Jazz stuff with the Pop 70's tracks as you mentioned, as well as 70's and 80's R&B that's mid-tempo. It's also a great time to play the requests from your client's list that aren't danceable or that would clear your floor during the open dancing portion of the evening. - MarkMix Entertainment
  • Great advice dude!! I normally will play Eric Johnson and even some mellow Liquid Tension Experiment. In my little town in Tennessee I am asked to play a lot of bluegrass, so I'll throw in some Iron Horse. They do Metallica covers bluegrass style. Its funny to see the younger metal heads in the crowd eys light up when they realize, "hey I know that song" - Billy Gambill
  • For cocktails at a wedding you need a mixture of light tunes including Jazz .. People would normally be sitting there listening to the actual tune so the volume needs to be low. During dinner then the tempo changes to more middle of the road selection. - MrMediamate
  • I like playing the Verve Remixed series during cocktail, and then the classic jazz originals during dinner. - tommytoony
  • Saving Private Ryan in the TV Set Nice! - jaime tellez
  • Top billboards jazz is great. But like to mix it up with some Latin jazz and smooth pop hits. - Manuel Benitez
  • Songs from the Hidden Beach Series are just awesome. There are seven CDs in the series. I use thse a lot at some of my finer Venues such as the Country Clubs. Here are a few samples:All from the Hidden Beach Series: Type in Hidden Beach then the name of the song: Electric Relaxation": "Gangstas Paradise" "Lose Yourself" Stan (Piano on this one is awesome) - ahoustondj
  • Natalie merchant tiger lilly, journey, cars, a few of my upbeat dinner lists. Enigma. - spillwill72
  • I'd like to add Frankie Knuckles - The Whistle Song (original) to this list :) - briansredd
  • agree with u - HYVBJ JGT
  • Excellent vid For contemporary jazz you could try Cafe Delmar, St Germain album Tourist. One of the best albums for old jazz is the Sleepless in Seatlle sound track, and the Robbie Williams 'Sing while you're winning'. Like you said some Mike Buble is good. Sometimes we play more of a rock ballad selection. Jack Johnson - Ed Sheeran - John Mayer- Ben Harper- Eagles My only addition is to get to know the style of the wedding the clients are trying to create, and get their input for the music. - WeddingDJBusiness
  • When I meet with my clients I get their input on their musical tastes and try to tailor cocktails and maybe even dinner music to reflect their personalities. It's a nice tribute to the couple and their friends usually appreciate that touch as well. If their tastes lean more toward the club scene, then I generally follow your suggestions because of the same reasons you mentioned in your video. - Jonathan Napper
  • Brian this is a great video, something I've wondered about many times when it comes to this part of a wedding. Thanks for sharing! - Sonic Orb Studios
  • This is one of your best tip videos ever, I've always had problems trying to figure this part of the gig out, the song samples you suggested are awesome. Thanks again for taking the time to share your tips. Hope to meet you in Vegas at the DJExpo.. - JaxSwat
